Organizational Diagnostics

Diagnostics allow an organization to benchmark, to establish baselines, to identify areas of strengths and weaknesses and to measure progress over time.  Scanlon Organizations frequently measure their cultures.  In order to measure frequently the cost of each measurement must be low and the process must be simple.

EPIC-Organizations.com has developed a variety of methods to make taking the pulse of an organization simple.  The following are examples.

The Scanlon EPIC Leadership Culture Inventory is a normed quick survey (printed on no carbon required paper) that allows the EPIC Principles and culture to be measured and discussed instantly. Over 10,000 employees in Scanlon Organizations served as the norm group.  No computers or statistics are needed which makes this tool very handy for training and small group discussions. Respondents complete a quick survey and the answers are automatically transferred and grouped for quick scoring.  To make the survey more fun and interesting results are plotted on an jet style instrument panel.

Identity is plotted on a radar.  Identity scales include Company, Customer, Stockholder and Competition.

Participation is plotted on a fuel gauge.  Participation scales include Individual and Team Participation.

Equity is plotted on an oil gauge.  Equity scales include Accountability and Pay

CompetenceCompetence is measured on a speedometer.  Competence scales are Skills/Training and Leadership

It takes only 15 minutes to complete the survey and plot the results.  The survey makes culture visible and tangible.  Once the results are plotted the Facilitator can lead a discussion on the EPIC Principles and the strengths and weaknesses of the Organization.

This survey cost is $3.00 per survey, and all sales go to support the nonprofit Scanlon Leadership Network.

Human Synergistics

Human Synergistics publishes a wide variety of diagnostics that measure individual, team and organizational styles.  Their instruments are primarily used as development tools. They are a very powerful way to help people understand how their thinking impacts their behaviors and how their behaviors help or hurt thier effectiveness.

I was invited by the Academy of Management to speak at their conference on my work with Human Synergistics materials and how they helped in the turnaround of Buick.  I am an approved Human Synergistics Consultant.

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator

The MBTI is one of the most popular psychometrics in the world.  It is based on Jungian Psychology.  Jung observed that much human behavior can be predicted if we know a few basic psychological preferences.  His work was made popular and tangible by a brilliant mother (Briggs)-daughter (Myers) team who created the MBTI preference indicator.  The MBTI is used for individual and team development, marriage counselling and career counselling.

The MBTI is often used (and abused) in training and development.  I worked with Dr. Mary McCaulley in the 1980's, a true pioneer in MBTI research, to create a game for the Center for Applications of Psychological Type that is still used today. I took the MBTI to South Africa before the end of apartheid to help prepare the South African Business Community by teaching them the constructive use of differences.

The MBTI is a very good tool to begin leadership development because there are no bad types.

The MBTI is a good tool to resolve conflicts as it teaches people the constructive use of differences.

The MBTI is a very inexpensive tool to purchase and use.
